NOVI SAD IN NUMBERS

The City of Novi Sad is the capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. It is situated in the eastern part of Europe, in Serbia, between 19° and 20° east longitude and 45° and 46° north latitude.

Novi Sad is located in the south of the Panonian Plain, on the left bank of the Danube, more precisely on the 1,255th kilometer of the Danube flow. The predominant part of Novi Sad is in South Backa and at the altitude of 72 to 80 meters. The city spreads out across an alluvial terrace and old road along the Danube. It is located in the place of the most appropriate access to the Danube and most convenient transition from Backa to Srem, where the river is only 350 meters wide.

According to the 2006 register, the City of Novi Sad has 16 districts and covers an area of 699 km2.

Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia, and 20% of the inhabitants of Vojvodina live in Novi Sad and its outer suburbs.

Average air temperature in the city is 10.9°C. In January the average is -1°C, while in July it is 21.6°C.

Temperature extremes vary between -30.7 degrees (January 24, 1963) and +41.5 degrees (July 6, 1950).

The annual rainfall is 686 mm, and there are 122 precipitation days.

The lowest Danube stage of flow is 70.83, and the highest is 79.70. The highest ever water-level recorded has been +778 cm, and the lowest -134 cm.

The City of Novi Sad comprises two municipalities: Novi Sad and Petrovaradin. According to the 2002 data of the Institute for Statistics, the municipalities have 299,294 inhabitants altogether, while unofficially they have close to half a million inhabitants.

Novi Sad is becoming more and more popular with students. According to the data of the Institute for Statistics, there are 19 faculties and five colleges in Novi Sad. Every year a large number of students come to Novi Sad. In academic year 2006/07, 34,188 students enrolled at a faculty, while 4,306 students graduated in the same academic year. Colleges were entered by 9,749 students, while 1,617 students graduated.

Novi Sad is developing regarding tourism as well. In 2006, the average number of overnights of domestic tourists was 1.9, and 2.1 of foreign tourists.
