RENOVATIONS ARE UNDERWAY IN ALMAŠKI DISTRICT, THE CITY'S OLDEST NEIGHBORHOOD

Novi Sad Mayor Žarko Mićin attended the 106th session of the collegium of experts gathered around the multi-year challenging project of the restoration and reconstruction of the Almaški city district, which is organized every week at the City Hall. Along with representatives from the competent organizations, the meeting was attended by Maja Čeremidžić Šainović, a member of the City Council for Culture, and Dalibor Rožić, the director of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Novi Sad. Other attendees included experts in architectural and communal activities.
- One of the most crucial projects for Novi Sad is the development of the Almaški district. The Almaški district is not a typical neighborhood; the oldest recollections of our city's founding can be found on its streets. As Novi Sad grows, we reaffirm our commitment to upholding the values of those who founded the city for coming generations. Today, we talked about carrying out all of the scheduled tasks. We observed that while a lot of work has already been completed, there are still large and crucial projects funded by the Provincial Government and the City of Novi Sad that we must complete this year. To ensure that we complete all of the work in the best interests of Novi Sad's residents, I will keep an eye on the dynamics of the project -Mayor Mićin stated.
For Novi Sad, one of the most crucial projects is the full revitalization of the Almaški district as a protected cultural and historical entity. It is situated in the southeast of Novi Sad and encompasses the majority of the Podbara neighborhood. Its total area is roughly 23 hectares. Complete infrastructure replacement, road construction, ground floor landscaping, traffic and traffic signals, public lighting, horticultural landscaping, urban furniture and equipment, tourist signals, and visual identity are all included in the activities. In this project, more than 600 homes will be rebuilt, and roughly twenty streets will have brand-new infrastructure.
- It is crucial to stress that this is not just about superficial "makeup" or beautifying a portion of the city; rather, it is about renovating everything that will not be as obvious, which is mainly the rebuilding of the public infrastructure. In addition to reducing traffic and returning the stone cube and lanterns to the Almaški district, we will also be renewing the sewage system, electrical and telecommunications installations, irrigation and heating systems, and investing in landscaping, public lighting, and—most importantly—greenery. This will create a new tourist area in Novi Sad by connecting our central city core—that is, the area surrounding Trg Slobode—to the Almaški district via a bike and pedestrian path – Mayor Mićin said.
