The event is part of the program “Jewish Cemeteries of Vojvodina: Preserving Memory, Protecting the Past”, which aims to preserve and protect old Jewish cemeteries across the province as lasting testimonies of the history and culture of the Jewish community.
At the ceremonial opening, speeches were delivered by the President of the Jewish Community of Novi Sad, Ladislav Trajer, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Serbia, Anke Conrad, the Ambassador of Israel to Serbia, Avivit Bar-Ilan, and Mayor Mićin.
- Novi Sad is a city that rightly prides itself on its multiculturalism, and on the fact that 26 nations live here in harmony, mutual respect, and understanding. Today, at the invitation of the Jewish Community of Novi Sad, I attended the ceremony as part of the program ‘Jewish Cemeteries of Vojvodina: Preserving Memory, Protecting the Past’, implemented in cooperation with the European Initiative for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries and with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office. Together with the President of the Jewish Community of Novi Sad, Ladislav Trajer, the Ambassador of Israel to Serbia, Avivit Bar-Ilan, and the German Ambassador to Serbia, Anke Conrad, I discussed the importance of preserving Jewish cemeteries as part of our shared cultural heritage. The Jewish community has contributed to the spiritual, cultural, and economic development of Novi Sad since the founding of the city. It is our duty to respectfully preserve the places where our fellow citizens are buried. By preserving Jewish cemeteries, we keep alive the memory of those who laid the foundations of today’s Novi Sad. We will continue to develop and improve Novi Sad together for future generations - said the Mayor.
The program was also attended by representatives of the European Initiative for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries, numerous members of the Jewish community, as well as representatives of city institutions, cultural organizations, and the diplomatic corps. Following the ceremonial part of the program, during which Ladislav Trajer presented the achievements of the project so far, participants visited two restored Jewish cemeteries in Kać and Budisava.
