In honor of the fallen soldiers of the National Liberation War 1941–1945, wreaths were laid at the Memorial Cemetery in Novi Sad on May 9, Victory Day over Fascism. The Mayor of Novi Sad Žarko Mićin, the head of the South Bačka Administrative District Milan Novaković, representatives of the SUBNOR City Board, a Serbian Army delegation headed by Brigadier General Jovica Matić, the commander of the First Land Army Brigade, and representatives of the city's reserve military officers organization laid the wreaths.
- On this day, May 9, 1945, good triumphed over evil. The light won out over the darkness. We honor each and every life sacrificed for our freedom and the freedom of humanity with respect and due consideration as the entire world of freedom commemorates the 80th anniversary of the defeat of fascism. We affirm that we work to create a Novi Sad that is more powerful, affluent, organized, and advanced by appreciating their actions. As a city committed to peace, harmony, respect for one another, tolerance, unity, and success, we will keep constructing and enhancing Novi Sad in remembrance of the courageous who gave their lives for our future. May our city continue to grow and advance for the benefit of current and future generations, just as May 9 represents the triumph of light over darkness - Mićin said.
The European theater of World War II came to an end on May 9, 1945, when Nazi Germany surrendered. Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel signed the unconditional surrender of Germany in Berlin, while Marshal Georgy Zhukov signed it on behalf of the Soviet Union and British Air Force General Arthur Tedder signed it on behalf of the Western Allies.
