The Novi Sad City Museum

The Novi Sad City Museum was founded in 1954 and belongs to the category of general city museums. It is devoted to the development of the city from its foundation to the present period and consists of the Department of Archeology (collections from prehistory, antiquity and the Middle Ages), Department of History (collections of economic, social and political history, and the history of the Petrovaradin Fortress), Department of Cultural History (collections of visual and applied art, education and publishing), Department of Ethnology (collections of craft, rural architecture, everyday and customary life) and Hometown Gallery (contemporary visual art).

Buildings and annexes of the Novi Sad City Museum:
1. The central building of the museum is located on the upper plateau of the Petrovaradin Fortress, in the structure known as Topovnjača (Gunboat) or Mamula's Barracks, which was built in 1775 as a one-floor barracks.
Ground floor of the building contains a permanent exhibition, the Petrovaradin Fortress in the Past, which presents the continuity of inhabitation and military fortifications of this locality, from prehistory to the World War I. On the first floor there is the Study Exhibition of the Department of Cultural History, which depicts the civil life of Novi Sad from the middle of the 18th century to the second half of the 20th century. Besides period furniture and objects of applied art, the exhibition displays pieces of renowned artists – Sava Šumanovic, Djordje Jovanović, Boško Petrović, Milenko Šerban, and others.
Underground military galleries: Part of one of the biggest attractions of the Petrovaradin Fortress is open for visitors, with expert guidance of the Novi Sad City Museum guiding service. Underground military galleries are a gradual four-level communication system, with different corridors and rooms of various purposes and sizes, with loopholes and airshafts.

2. Collection of Foreign Art. This annex contains a part of legacy of Branko Ilić, PhD, which consists of French, German, Italian and Austrian works of art originating from the period between 16th and 20th century, as well as period furniture and objects of applied art. The collection is situated in the building constructed in 1903 according to the designs of Wien architect Frantz Woruda, and is the mixture of neoclassicism and Art Nouveau.

3. Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj Memorial Collection. The annex is situated in the house in which the poet spent the last years of his life. The house was adapted and opened to public in 1933. The permanent exhibition presents the poet's family life, his literary and public work, his work on children's literature, as well as his medical work.

4. Sremski Karlovci Hometown Collection: The annex belongs to the category of general city museums. Historical, archeological, ethnological and art collection, with ten thousand objects, constitute the museum's resource, which includes the collection of poet Branko Radičević, legacies of "Karlovačka Gimnazija" (language high school in Sremski Karlovci), painter Milić od Mačve, architect Svetomir Lazić and other private individuals. The collection is installed in the baroque residence of Baron Rajačić, known as the Ilion Palace. One portion of this rich fund is presented in the permanent exhibition.
